COLORBOND® steel is more than a world-class building product. It’s an iconic brand that’s helped the men and women of our building industry shape the very landscape in which we live. COLORBOND® steel is tried and tested in Australian conditions to look great and deliver outstanding, long life performance. With 22 colours in the Classic and Contemporary range, you can choose a roof colour that sets the theme for your whole home, or complements your other building material choices.

Manufactured in Australia to relevant Australian Standards (AS 1397-2011 and AS/NZS 2728:2013) and tested in some of the harshest Australian conditions, COLORBOND® steel is far more than just ‘paint on steel’.
- The steel base is manufactured to meet relevant Australian Standards, ensuring strict adherence to the required grade and strength.
- The base is then coated in BlueScope’s industry leading metallic coating incorporating Activate® technology, to provide enhanced corrosion resistance.
- A thin pretreatment layer is applied to optimise the adhesion of further coatings.
- A corrosion inhibitive primer is baked onto the surface.
- A topcoat of specially developed, exterior grade paint is baked on to provide resistance to chipping, flaking and blistering and to ensure the finish retains its look for longer.

The product range represented in this entry and product description is the COLORBOND® steel standard colour range at 0.42mm and 0.48mm base metal (steel) thickness (BMT), and all information provided here and in the remaining columns is specific to this product only. The information provided may not be valid for or apply to other paint finishes/products such as COLORBOND® steel Matt, COLORBOND® Stainless steel, COLORBOND® Metallic steel, COLORBOND® Coolmax® steel, COLORBOND® Coolroom steel, double sided COLORBOND® steel (for fencing and home improvements), COLORBOND® steel products with a galvanised steel substrate or other colours outside of the Classic and Contemporary range.

Structure Not applicable
Damp and weatherproofing Tested COLORBOND® steel conforms with AS1397-2011 and AS/NZS 2728:2013, referred to by AS/NZS 2179.1:2014 Specifications for rainwater goods and AS/NZS 2904:1995 Damp-proof courses and flashings. Weatherproofing testing and certification would relate to specific profiles rather than the COLORBOND® steel material itself.

Fire resistance Tested The steel substrate of COLORBOND® steel has been tested to AS 1530.1-1994 (R2016) "Combustibility test for materials" and deemed not combustible. COLORBOND® steel has also been tested to AS 1530.3-1999 (R2016) and scored zero in the Ignitability, Spread of Flame and Heat Evolved indexes, and 2 out of 10 in the Smoke Developed index.

COLORBOND® steel may be used wherever a non-combustible material is required (NCC, Building Code of Australia 2019; Volume 1 Part C1.9.e, and Volume 2: Part 3.7.1.1.e). Whether you live, or are planning to build in a bushfire prone area, or simply want to increase the bushfire protection afforded to your home, COLORBOND® steel may help protect your property.

For information on fire hazard properties, refer to the Product Data Sheet at steelproducts.bluescopesteel.com.au/home/technical-library/datasheets.
Bushfire Information declared Roofing, walling, gutters and downpipes made from COLORBOND® steel may be used as part of a National Construction Code (NCC) compliant system in bushfire prone areas, including in the most extreme, BAL-FZ (Bushfire Attack Level – Flame Zone - as defined in AS 3959:2018).

The ‘NASH* Standard – Steel Framed Construction in Bushfire areas’ is referenced in the NCC as a Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) solution for the design and construction of steel framed homes in bushfire areas in all States** and Territories.

The ‘BlueScope Steel Product Solutions for Bushfire Areas – NASH Bushfire Standard Guide’ is available at www.bluescopesteel.com.au/tools-and-resources/bushfire-design and sets out acceptable construction details for residential and low-rise buildings in bushfire prone areas using BlueScope products.

Alternative paths to compliance to the NCC are included in AS 3959:2018 ‘Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas’.

Energy efficiency Information declared Five COLORBOND® steel colours meet the cool roofing 0.45 Solar Absorptance Cool Roofing DTS requirements in NCC 2019 volume 1.

Many people know that the colour of your roof can make a difference to your cooling bill and no less than five of the standard colours in the COLORBOND® steel range qualify as solar reflective (light coloured) roofing under the Green Star Design and As Built v1.3 and Communities v1.1 tools. But there‘s another way that COLORBOND® steel can help make your building more energy efficient. Colours (except Night Sky®) in the COLORBOND® steel Classic and Contemporary range feature Thermatech® solar reflectance technology^. Thermatech® technology is designed to reflect more of the sun‘s heat on hot sunny days, which can mean less dependence on air-conditioning, plus reduced heat stress for your roof.^ This makes COLORBOND® steel a good choice for your building, your wallet and our planet.

For more information contact BlueScope Steel Direct at www.steel.com.au/contact.

Thermatech® technology is only available in the COLORBOND® steel Classic and Contemporary range (excluding Night Sky®): for details, see https://colorbond.com/colour. Not available in any other colours, in COLORBOND® Stainless steel, COLORBOND® Metallic steel, COLORBOND® Coolmax® steel or COLORBOND® Coolroom steel. Results will depend on roof colour, level and location of insulation, type and location of building shape and function.
Sound transmission and insulation Not applicable
